Understanding Your Treatment
The board-certified physicians at The Dermatology Group believe in providing you with important information about your procedure so that you can make an informed choice regarding your treatment. Below you will find answers to common questions about BOTOX and Dysport.
What is the difference between BOTOX and Dysport?
Both BOTOX and Dysport are made from botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes targeted muscles, thus minimizing or eliminating unwanted wrinkles. One key difference between the two products is that they are manufactured by different companies (Allergan is the maker of BOTOX; Dysport is made by Medicis). BOTOX has been on the market longer than Dysport, but both have received FDA approval for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.
How do BOTOX and Dysport help with wrinkles?
Dynamic wrinkles are created by the muscle movement of facial expressions. Constant smiling, squinting, and frowning etch lines into the skin that become deeper over time. BOTOX and Dysport prevent the facial muscles from contracting – thereby restricting movement and relaxing wrinkles.
A session of carefully administered injections from one of the medical professionals at The Dermatology Group will smooth and soften wrinkles, giving you a younger looking appearance. Many other conditions – such as chin dimples, neck lines, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) – can be corrected with these products, also.
Individuals who want to fill in the look of deeper lines and creases may also benefit from dermal fillers such as Restylane® or JUVÉDERM®. Combining BOTOX with dermal filler injections can also create a temporary lifting effect on the skin in a procedure that is often referred to as a "liquid facelift." Skin resurfacing treatments may also be used to enhance the quality of the skin, making it smoother, softer, and more radiant.
What happens during treatment?
The highly trained healthcare providers at The Dermatology Group are experts at properly administering injectable treatments to help you achieve the look you want – whether subtle or dramatic. Your skin is first cleansed and a numbing cream may be applied for increased comfort. A series of several tiny injections are then administered into the targeted muscle. Our physicians use very precise, controlled injection methods to ensure that your results look natural, never over-done.
Your procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the area being treated. Results begin to appear in 1 to 2 days with Dysport or 3 to 7 days with BOTOX, and will last between 3 to 6 months.
Is it safe?
The safety of botulinum toxin type A has been thoroughly researched and studied for over a decade. In fact, before the product was used for cosmetic purposes, it had a long history of use for medical conditions – such as the treatment of muscle spasms and neurological disorders. Millions of people have had BOTOX injections with very few complications.
What are the side effects?
The side effects associated with BOTOX and Dysport are very minimal but may include temporary bruising, swelling, or redness that will resolve within a few days. BOTOX does not affect the nerves responsible for sensation, so there is no numbness or change in feeling in the treated areas. In very rare cases, BOTOX or Dysport may cause eyelid droopiness, but this is temporary and can be treated with medicated eye drops.
